Pink was the color of the day on October 7th as nearly 100 members of the Capital Canyon Club teed off in the “Swing Fore the Cure” golf tournament that raised $29,484 for the Breast Care Center at Dignity Health, Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC).

“This was the first time we had come together to organize such an event, so our committee set a modest goal. We hoped, with fingers crossed, to raise perhaps $15,000,” said event Chair Judith Hinds. “We were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and generosity of our Club members and our sponsors. In addition to exceeding our fundraising goal, the event generated such a warm feeling of community and purpose that was both inspirational and gratifying.”

The Breast Care Center at YRMC was established in 2013 in response to studies that indicated Yavapai County had the highest incidence of breast cancer in Arizona. Today, the Center’s multidisciplinary team – physicians, nurses, imaging professionals, volunteers and more – provides comprehensive and coordinated breast care in a compassionate and supportive environment. In 2020, the Center provided care to more than 10,000 patients.

In addition to raising philanthropic support for the Center, Club members wanted to use the tournament as a vehicle to increase community awareness about breast health.

“We worked with the Foundation staff to produce a 19-minute breast health education video that we played at our registration table and at our luncheon and awards program,” said committee member Teresa Busser. “Additionally, we set up a breast health information table for event participants displaying information about breast self-examination, breast screening guidelines, lifestyle habits that protect against breast cancer and Breast Care Center services.”

“Our hearts are filled with gratitude,” said the YRMC Foundation’s Executive Director, Robbie Nicol. “We are so appreciative of the Club’s members and staff for hosting such a wonderful event. The money raised through the event will positively impact thousands of lives here in our community.”

The YRMC Foundation’s Breast Care Center Fund supports the purchase of the latest medical technology and essential health supports for patients undergoing treatment who have limited resources and are at risk. Professional staff education and the Center’s breast health community outreach initiatives are also supported through our community’s charitable support.
