YRMC Patient Blood Management: Improving Outcomes for You

What is Patient Blood Management (PBM)? It’s a patient-centered approach to delivering healthcare that improves patient outcomes. At YRMC, this begins with a conversation about your healthcare and why we work hard to prevent unnecessary blood transfusions. Medical research shows that while some blood transfusions are medically necessary, they can also be risky and affect recovery. That’s why YRMC clinicians have embraced PBM. Here are some of our PBM strategies:

  • Talking to you about the risks and benefits of transfusions (known in the medical world as “informed consent” or “informed choice”)
  • Minimizing the frequency and volume of blood draws
  • Treating anemia early so blood is healthy heading into surgery
  • Correcting bleeding tendencies some people may have
  • Using techniques and equipment to manage blood usage during surgery

YRMC – Your Destination for Cardiac Care and Blood Management

PBM was introduced to YRMC’s Heart Program by Pierre Tibi, MD, FACS, an acclaimed Cardiothoracic Surgeon and internationally recognized PBM expert. Dr. Tibi, Medical Director of the James Family Heart Center at YRMC West in Prescott, also championed YRMC’s system-wide adoption of PBM. Today, YRMC is a destination for people seeking patient blood management and exceptional cardiac care services.

Check out the video below YRMC – Your Destination for Cardiac Care and Blood Management to learn more about how PBM improves healthcare at YRMC. The October 17, 2019, live-stream event featured prominent heart specialists and patient blood management experts. This knowledgeable team explored the programs and services bringing people to the Prescott-area for heart care and patient blood management.
