YRMC Patient Blood Management: Improving Outcomes for You
What is Patient Blood Management (PBM)? It’s a patient-centered approach to delivering healthcare that improves patient outcomes. At YRMC, this begins with a conversation about your healthcare and why we work hard to prevent unnecessary blood transfusions. Medical research shows that while some blood transfusions are medically necessary, they can also be risky and affect recovery. That’s why YRMC clinicians have embraced PBM. Here are some of our PBM strategies:
- Talking to you about the risks and benefits of transfusions (known in the medical world as “informed consent” or “informed choice”)
- Minimizing the frequency and volume of blood draws
- Treating anemia early so blood is healthy heading into surgery
- Correcting bleeding tendencies some people may have
- Using techniques and equipment to manage blood usage during surgery
