Pierre Tibi, M.D., Reflects on the Development of the James Family Heart Center

Yavapai Regional Medical Center is celebrating its achievements and thanking our community for its support as the hospital marks its 75th anniversary this year. Pierre Tibi, M.D., a nationally acclaimed cardiothoracic surgeon and Medical Director of the James Family Heart Center has a unique perspective on this celebration, as he was instrumental in an important milestone – the ability to offer people in the Prescott area a full range of cardiac diagnostics, cardiac surgery, interventional care and cardiac rehabilitation. Beginning in 2007, residents no longer had to travel out of town for this spectrum of specialized care.

Over the years, the James Family Heart Center has become a highly respected heart program, both nationally and internationally.

Tibi says that one of the many impressive developments is the opening of a state-of-the-art multi-functioning hybrid operating room, where many different procedures can be done, “You can do interventional procedures, catheterizations, you can do electrophysiology, you can do vascular surgery, you can do cardiac surgery, so it’s really a room that has multiple purposes,” explains Tibi. The hybrid OR is among the finest in the nation. “It brings so much more potential to what we do now, as well as what we can do in the future.”

In addition, YRMC has become a leading proponent of Patient Blood Management, a program that reduces the need for, and therefore the inherent risks of, blood transfusions. The program attracts patients from all over the state and beyond, including a delegation of chiefs and vice chiefs of anesthesia from China who attended a one-day symposium sponsored by YRMC. While at YRMC, the group viewed a live surgical video-cast of a heart procedure at YRMC, featuring Patient Blood Management techniques.

Tibi looks to the future of the YRMC heart program with great confidence. He’d like his legacy to be a simple, yet far-reaching one, “That people who come to YRMC, or are having heart surgery at YRMC, are confident that they are getting the best that medical care can provide, here at home.”
