Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy for Arthritic Knee Pain

Is arthritic knee pain starting to affect your day-to-day activities? You’re not alone. Studies show that by age 45, 17% of adults experience some form of knee pain from arthritis. This increases 1% with each year of age.

When discomfort begins to keep you from doing the things you enjoy, it may be time to look into a safe and effective treatment that will get you moving comfortably again. Dr. Bradley Benson from the YRMC PhysicianCare Spine Center in Prescott, Arizona offers Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy, a safe, non-surgical treatment for arthritic knee pain.

“The great thing about Platelet Rich Plasma is that it uses the body’s own cells to do the healing work,” says Benson.

Platelets in our blood contain growth factors, whose main function is to offer healing and regeneration. In PRP Therapy, a small sample of the patient’s blood is taken and spun in a centrifuge, which separates the platelet-rich plasma from other components, such as white and red blood cells. This concentrated platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the knee joint under ultrasound guidance. These platelet-rich cells stimulate the body’s own healing process, which brings healing and pain relief to the knee.

Patients who have been on pain medication or steroid injections for arthritic knee pain now have an alternative that offers fewer side effects. In addition, the need for knee surgery can be greatly reduced.
